ABOUT YOGA

Yoga began thousands of years ago and is one of India's ancient traditions.  The word "Yoga" means to 'join together' or to 'unite', encouraging the body and mind to come into harmony or balance. Over time, yoga sages have passed on their wisdom and knowledge through teachers and students and today, this ancient philosophy is practised in various forms all over the world.

Hectic daily routines and the challenges of life create stress on the human body, leading to imbalances both physically and mentally. Hatha Yoga is one style which has reached the shores of the Western World and is now widely used to improve strength, increase flexibility and develop good breathing and relaxation techniques for the health and longevity of body and mind. Generally interpreted as the "Yoga of (physical) Action", it's aim is to balance 'Ha-' (sun energy) and '-tha' (moon energy) in preparation for deeper practices such as Pranayama and Meditation.

Each class usually includes:

  • Limbers - to warm up the body

  • Asana - physical action or movements of the body

  • Pranayama - breath control (learning how to breathe properly)

  • Relaxation - learning how to relax and release the body and the mind of tension

"When the breath (Prana) is irregular, the mind is unsteady. But when the breath is steady the mind can become still."
